Is My Orthodontic Treatment Going to Prevent Me From Playing Contact Sport?

Apr 18, 2024

Hi! I’m Dr Mike Anderson from Allstar Orthodontics here in Brisbane.

I was with our new patient Harry and his mum Sandra from Bowen Hills yesterday. Harry is 16, he is a huge maroons fan and he loves his rugby! During our consultation, he asked me if he can still play while he has his braces.

This is such a common question, so I thought I’ll make this quick video, just in case you might be thinking the same thing for your child.

Is My Orthodontic Treatment Going to Prevent Me From Playing Contact Sport?

The good news is contact sports can still be played. In fact, any sport can still be played if you have braces, and a mouth guard can be worn over the braces to protect the teeth, the lips and gums during any contact sports.

If you have clear aligners, then we can design a custom mouth guard that could fit over them. You don’t even need to take the aligners out when you’re playing sports. They can stay in and the mouth guard goes over the top, just as it would go over the top of braces.

Basically, It is safe for people to keep playing contact sports like rugby, even when they have braces on.
