Mouthguards can still be worn when braces have been fitted. Orthodontists can supply mouthguards for braces. Contact sports such as rugby, football, hockey, waterpolo and martial arts require the use of a mouthguard. A mouthguard for braces should cover both the top teeth and lower teeth. This allows any sport to still be played after braces have been fitted. The mouthguard can be worn over the braces for martial arts when sparring in Tae Kwon Do and other martial arts. The mouthguard is worn over the braces and will cushion the lips if there is impact to the mouth. Most orthodontists will emphasize the importance of wearing a mouthguard for contact sports. Orthodontists can fit the mouthguard over the braces and give instructions for wear.
