Treatments for Children

Orthodontic problems are usually apparent by seven to nine years of age, when most of the adult front teeth have come through. However, in some cases, problems may be detected earlier.

Early treatment

Early examination of the teeth and jaws allows us to detect and evaluate problems, and plan the best treatment. Plates or removable appliances may be required to correct crossbites or to reduce large overbites.

It is often easier and more successful to carry out these types of corrections while there are still baby teeth present.

Plates sit in the mouth behind the teeth and it is often not possible to detect that someone is wearing a plate because it is usually not visible. Plates can also be used to correct teeth that are too widely spaced or for impacted teeth. Occasionally partial braces may be needed for a child when the problem is too complex for a plate.
